Cincinnati Children's Hospital - Backyard Discoveries

5 large collage artworks created for the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Eastgate location. These pieces feature common scenes from the backyard including a Boston Terrier through a tire swing, a visitor from the woods, a koi pond, lightning bugs in trees, and raccoons coming out of a tree.

These are a collaboration between me and some of the staff at the hospital. I lead a workshop where they were invited to paint textures and patterns on paper. I then used that paper along with other pieces that I painted to create these pieces.

My maternal grandmother passed away on my 13th birthday. I had a really hard time dealing with this loss. She was the main support to my mom as I was growing up, so we spent a lot of time together. She was also a painter. I feel like I’ve never completely dealt with her passing. This artwork is a meditation on that unresolved grief.

A white and yellow skull emerges from a jumbled field of colorful shapes and gems. I began this piece using shapes inspired by Mamaw’s rhinestone jewelry. The shapes in the background are based on these glittery decorations. I like that the skull seems to be smiling.

Not only is the cardinal the state bird of Kentucky and Indiana, but it is also the mascot of the University of Louisville. The Louisville Cardinals have some of the fiercest fans in NCAA sports. There are not many other places in the country where college sports are elevated to such a high degree. This piece explores the excitement of being part of something bigger than yourself.

The making of an 8ft x 8ft mural for the new Kroger Marketplace on Dixie Highway in Louisville, Ky. The mural was created with acrylic paint and painted paper on masonite. This project was the result of a partnership between Louisville Visual Art and Kroger Co.

A striking, stoic bull gazes at the viewer in front of a textured red background. This work is created with acrylic paint and painted pieces of paper affixed to the canvas. The differently painted pieces of paper come together to form a colorful, nearly life size bull. The 40x30 canvas is a bold addition to any space.

I have been fascinated with bulls for as long as I can remember. Images of matadors and bulls from Spain have always piqued my interest, as well as cowboy and rodeo culture. I even struggled through a reading of the book Death in the Afternoon by Ernest Hemingway because of my interest in the animal. It may be because my astrological sign is Taurus or just that I think having horns would be cool. However the fascination started, I decided to make this image starring one of these powerful creatures.
